PLUMLEAF VINTAGE Story 3 — THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL
by Anne Brontë
By Maggie Goh
I knew Anne Brontë’s long-overlooked novel was the one to complete the arc of three epistolary novels to launch Plumleaf Vintage, but the physical size had me daunted for a while. After much discussion with the team, we decided this powerful novel, with its strong feminist overtones that so outraged Victorian readers, was too compelling to be overlooked yet again. As before, I turned to Natalie Jenner for help, and once again, she came up with another perfect author friend to write the Introduction — Finola Austin, who had just launched her debut novel, Brontë’s Mistress. The editors took a while to check the manuscript, giving Finola time to write the Introduction while on vacation back home in Ireland, and our Creative Director plenty of time to create yet another stunning cover.

“In this book, [Anne Brontë] enters into territory that was shocking to contemporary audiences and remains controversial today. It is a novel about spiritual and moral incompatibility, custody disputes, and financial and psychological abuse … the most overtly feminist of the Brontë novels.”
