Nocturne

By Marilyn Lightstone

And “What (you may ask) is a poem to an actress like yourself?’

And I would reply, “Why a mini drama, of course!”

Seven nights a week, listeners tune in to Nocturne on the New Classical FM, hosted by Marilyn Lightstone — for two hours of poetry selected and read by Ms. Lightstone, interwoven with classical music. Inspired by the many fans who have written to her about the poetry, Ms. Lightstone has gathered some of the poems she read on the radio program into a stunning poetry collection of classic to contemporary poems by renowned and lesser-known poets. Nocturne: Poems to Linger Over is a celebration for the poetry lover, and also features beautiful paintings by Ms. Lightstone.

NOCTURNE: POEMS TO LINGER OVER

Selected by Marilyn Lightstone

Some notes to share our thoughts on how we organized the poems in Nocturne: Poems to Linger Over

THE MUSE (CREATING)
Creativity is innate, magical, maybe mystical. It can emerge from many places. The poems in
“The Muse” focus on the process of creating. Where does the inspiration to create come from?
What/who is your muse?

MEETING AT NIGHT (LOVING)
“Meeting at Night” is aptly titled. Night is synonymous with love and desire, but the passion and ecstasy of loving someone are often tempered by doubt and confusion. People everywhere look for this complex mix of emotions called love. A lucky few find it.

I ASK MY MOTHER TO SING (CONNECTING)
How empty would life be if we were not connecting with another. Friends, family, lovers – our relationships sustain us and give us a reason to carry on, even when we may not want to.

AFTERNOON ON A HILL (LIVING)
The poems in “Afternoon on a Hill” explore the many ways of living and being alive. What do you need to live a happy life? How much more do you want than what you have?

SO WE’LL GO NO MORE A ROVING (THRIVING)
And in the twilight years, can we move from enduring to thriving and celebrating … our life, our loves, our knowledge, our joys. As the body slows down and the mind begins to dim, what will help us move beyond surviving to thriving?
